Car culture in October 2026: five stories worth following

Our editorial watchlist covers drift telemetry, import restomods, off-road builds, performance EVs, and the approaching SEMA Show.

A trend is more useful when it gives you a better question to ask. This is an October 13, 2026 editorial watchlist based on current organizer, industry, and manufacturer sources. It is not a search-volume ranking or a claim that every topic is growing at the same speed.

THE GARAGE TAKEAWAY

Use trends to sharpen your own build brief. An interesting industry story does not automatically belong on your parts list.

Drifting is giving fans more data

Formula DRIFT introduced a new telemetry-supported PRO qualifying approach for 2026. The interesting question for fans is how that information changes their understanding of the driving. Our separate judging guide explains the format and how to watch with more context.

Autobros take: watch whether a graphic helps you understand the run, not merely whether it looks technical. For creators, a clear explanation of one moment is a more useful story than another unsupported claim about a controversial result. Keep observation, official explanation, and personal opinion visibly separate.

Import restomods deserve a closer look

SEMA's May/June 2026 magazine coverage includes import restomod culture among its featured subjects. That is an editorial signal worth following, not proof of future resale values or a reason to buy a particular car.

Autobros take: the interesting creative problem is preserving character while making ownership more practical. What makes a car feel like itself: its proportions, cabin, response, sound, or a family connection? Start with that answer. A cohesive OEM+ or restomod brief can help you avoid spending money on changes that erase the thing you liked in the first place.

Off-road style has a substantial aftermarket

SEMA's June 2026 release reports that pickup and SUV modifications represented 43% of the U.S. accessory-and-performance aftermarket in 2025. It also reports more than $15 billion spent modifying pickups that year. These describe the previous year's market, not forecast revenue for a new shop.

Autobros take: separate the visual appeal of a build from the trips its owner actually takes. Useful stories can follow packing, storage, route planning, and everyday compromises as well as spectacular equipment. Our overland planning guide starts with a realistic first trip rather than a complete expedition shopping cart.

Performance EVs are a conversation about feel

Hyundai's 2026 IONIQ 5 N manual describes virtual shifting through its N e-Shift function. It is a concrete example of a manufacturer designing driver feedback into an electric performance car. It does not establish that every driver will enjoy the effect.

Autobros take: ask what makes a car engaging for you. Controls, response, comfort, energy planning, and the way a car fits your routine are worth discussing alongside acceleration. Comparing those qualities creates more useful coverage than sorting enthusiasts into opposing camps based only on powertrain.

SEMA is a chance to collect questions

The official SEMA Show site lists November 3–6, 2026 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. That makes October a useful time to prepare a watchlist. The 2026 show is still ahead as this article is published; coverage of the 2025 show should not be presented as results from this year's event.

Autobros take: give yourself three things to investigate in the coverage: a practical product, a thoughtful build detail, and a tradeoff the builder had to solve. Record whether each item is a concept, a demonstration, or a product with documented availability. Inspiration is valuable even when the exact part never belongs in your garage.

A couple of good questions

Are these the most-searched automotive topics?

No. This is an evidence-backed editorial selection, not a measured popularity ranking. The linked sources support the specific developments described.
