350Z or 370Z: two starting points, one careful plan

Keep 350Z and 370Z research separate, document what is already installed and budget around the condition of the individual car.

U.S. 350Z Coupe 2003–2008 and Roadster 2004–2009; 370Z Coupe 2009–2020 and Roadster 2010–2019. Excludes the newer Nissan Z.
THE FIRST PURCHASE IS A PLAN

Record your exact configuration. Resolve unknowns. Buy for the job you actually need.

01

Put the correct Z in the search box

Start by separating the two models. Nissan introduced the 350Z as a 2003 model, adding the Roadster for 2004. The 370Z Coupe arrived for 2009, while a 350Z Roadster was still offered that year; the 370Z Roadster followed for 2010. Consequently, '2009 Nissan Z' is not enough information for a parts order. Record the exact model, body, transmission, trim and engine identification, plus factory brake or performance packages. Do not treat the 350Z and 370Z as one compatibility group.

02

Inspect the current car, not its reputation

Older enthusiast cars can carry several owners' decisions. Gather receipts and an installed-parts list, then compare them with what is actually on the vehicle. Ask an independent inspector to assess its condition and flag undocumented changes or repairs that deserve further investigation. Include tires, brakes, suspension condition and any signs of water intrusion in the conversation without assuming a model-wide fault. On a Roadster, ask for a roof assessment as well. An attractive purchase price means little until you understand the work required.

03

Separate ownership money from project money

Make one budget for keeping the car usable and another for your chosen hobby. Start with inspection findings, overdue documented service and appropriate replacement tires. Use Nissan's manuals portal to select the exact model and year rather than borrowing a maintenance schedule from a different Z. Then price your intended activity, whether weekend drives, a car show or instruction at an organized event. A drifting goal also needs venue rules, instruction and operating expenses; buying a popular platform does not make those costs disappear.

04

Require an application-specific answer

A wheel, brake or suspension listing should identify the exact application and any exclusions. Ask about the brakes currently fitted, required clearances and whether previous modifications change the answer. Keep installation and follow-up costs beside the advertised part price. If you are buying an interior accessory or storage item, measure the actual available space. Build a photographed baseline and preserve records of every later change. A sensible first milestone is a documented car with known needs, a realistic cash reserve and one improvement tied to how you use it.
