2022–2025 BRZ and GR86: start with the exact car

Build a usable plan for your particular BRZ or GR86, with maintenance, driver development and verified fitment ahead of impulse purchases.

U.S. second-generation Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86, model years 2022–2025. Excludes first-generation BRZ, Scion FR-S and Toyota 86.
THE FIRST PURCHASE IS A PLAN

Record your exact configuration. Resolve unknowns. Buy for the job you actually need.

01

Separate generation from specification

The U.S. 2022 BRZ and GR86 introduced the second generation, with a 2.4-liter engine. That gives you a useful search boundary, but BRZ and GR86 are not interchangeable labels for every part or specification. Start a vehicle card with brand, model year, trim, transmission and installed packages. Photograph the current wheels and brakes and record any suspension changes. When a listing says it fits an '86,' check which generation and brand it actually names. Also distinguish a factory special edition from an ordinary car wearing similar badges.

02

Reconstruct the ownership history

Gather service invoices and ask the seller for records of prior modifications, installation work and any return to standard specification. A car that currently looks stock may still have an incomplete history. Use the Subaru resources for a BRZ and Toyota resources for a GR86, selecting the correct model year. Put unclear items on a question list for an independent inspection. Record findings and quotes before choosing upgrades, and preserve a budget for issues that appear only after a professional has assessed the car.

03

Pick a first season, not a final build

Choose one realistic use case for the next few months: enjoyable commuting, weekend drives or a first supervised motorsport event. Write down what currently limits that experience. Is it poor maintenance documentation, worn tires, uncomfortable storage arrangements or a lack of instruction? Budget around the answer. For an event, read the organizer's preparation requirements and the car's applicable manual guidance before paying for equipment. An online build list is not a substitute for those requirements. Keep public-road use and closed-course plans distinct.

04

Compare complete costs

Create a short proposal for each purchase that includes the part, confirmed application, installation, supporting work and any follow-up checks. Wheel shopping should include tire dimensions, brake clearance and the actual suspension configuration. Cabin accessories need a secure location that does not obstruct controls or safety equipment. Record your reason for buying before placing an order; it makes later decisions easier when another tempting product appears. After one change, use the car normally and decide whether it solved the original problem before expanding the project.
